Francois Rabelais’ Satire of Medieval and Renaissance Learning In Gargantua and Pantagruel In his book Gargantua and Pantagruel, Francois Rabelais uses satire to address the dislocation felt by Renaissance Humanists. By providing an exaggerated fable, comical in nature, Rabelais poses a serious introspection into the extremes of both the Medieval and the Renaissance man. More importantly, however, he brings into question his own ideals of Humanism. Through an analysis of Rabelais’ satirical technique and by examining his social parody of the Medieval and the Renaissance man, we are able to better understand Rabelais’ introspection into the ideals of his own generation and to accept his argument that learning is transitory and often†¦show more content†¦Yet, Rabelais also provides them with a word of caution: â€Å"Following the dog’s example, you will have to be wise in sniffing, smelling, and estimating these fine and meaty books [†¦] you should break the bone and suck the substantific marrow† (49). Like the dog who chews a bone, Rabelais tells his readers to look beyond the humor to the true meaning of the stories. Thus, he seems to suggest that Gargantua and Pantagruel is not just a comedy but a commentary. He seems to reinforce this idea in his glib statement: â€Å"If you don’t believe it, I don’t care; but a good fellow, a man of good sense, ought always to believe what anybody tells him and whatever he sees in print† (69). The reader can assume that Rabelais’ sarcasm is not just meant to be funny, but to be a warning. Rabelais suggests that the reader shouldn’t take anything at face value but should keep focused on discovering the true meaning behind his writing. With that warning, Rabelais then begins his fantastic story and satire of giants who possess the qualities of humans strikingly similar to the humans of the Medieval Ages. Oliver Twist, a poor, innocent orphan boy, stands out in this story as the main character but it is the supporting characters that allow this novel of much content to develop a much more satisfying and believable theme. Though at first he accuses Oliver of thieving, his concern over Oliver's welfare on the street is a direct hint of his innocence which successfully helps him convince Oliver to board at his house. A generous and trusting man he was, perhaps too good a man to be true; but with all the malicious characters in the story, a heroic and pure persona was needed to ensure a happy ending. With honesty and great wealth as his prime qualities, he assists Oliver in his times of need and demonstrates to society with an exemplary touch, the attributes of a perfect citizen. As the positive extreme in both social status and benevolence, Mr. Brownlow is a definite aid in the development of the theme throughout the novel. Nancy, for us, must be the weakest character. Trapped between wanting to help Oliver evade Fagin' s exploitation and her dedicated love for Sikes; she fails to survive to the end as she is convicted and ironically murdered by her own husband : Sikes, a brutal and abusive man. But there is a great need for this secondary character in the story, she serves not only as a tie between the scenes at the different house holds but as well she is the only hope of salvation for Oliver. Without her, Oliver may have never had the chance to grow up in a loving home and learn to be proper in his actions and pure in the soul. A study conducted by Michelson and Steinhorn (2007) in England investigated the palliative costs of managing various types of life-limiting disabilities on children. Though the study focused on particular standards needed to cater for patients suffering from a particular life-limiting disorder, it gave insights of financial costs that such life-limiting disorders have on families.
